Shifty, a young crack cocaine dealer in London, sees his life quickly spiral out of control when his best friend returns home. Far into the future after the world has brought about the apocalypse what remains of humanity has split into two warring tribes - the Plaebian and the Huron. Human kind's ambitions are not wealth or prosperity, but merely survival. The Huron tribe have reverted to the Hunter/Gatherer methods of our forefathers becoming great warriors with no regard to the future. Seven students answer an advertisement to participate in an experiment to explore how the sensation of pain can be eliminated. Arriving at a secluded institute, they are welcomed by mysterious scientist JB Divay. Initially, JB's fascination with hypnosis, clocks and cactus plants are dismissed by the group as mere eccentricities. But as the students begin to disappear one by one, they begin to question JB's true intentions. In a final showdown, plucky Jason confronts JB over her deranged practices only to discover boyfriend Kyle strapped to a table beneath JB's final experiment, inches away from the razor's edge.
In the run-up to Christmas, Barnaby and Jones find themselves, thanks to their very young 'wonder boy' chief superintendent, on a team-building exercise at the local Territorial Army Centre, run by Matt Parkes. Colonel Parkes is a highly respected man, unlike his womanizing waster of a son, Jamie, who is hated by all,even Caroline, his grand-mother, whose daughter died giving birth to him. Especially bitter is Penny Galsworthy,wife of another T.A. officer and garage owner Tim, whose daughter killed herself after being impregnated by Jamie, and she stalks him obsessively. George Barkham, another soldier, missed out on being promoted to a partnership at Matt Parkes' haulage firm, thanks to Jamie, who is also black-mailing George's daughter. The Parkes' yard is torched, causing an explosion and a watch-man almost killed. Then a criminal associate of Jamie and Jamie himself both meet their maker in quick succession...
