Nino Monti, un commercialista pavese, incontra in autobus una donna amata nella giovinezza, Anna Brigatti, ormai sfiorita e disfatta. La rivede in concomitanza con un efferato delitto. Intanto da un amico dottore, viene a sapere che Anna è morta di cancro da tre anni, dopo aver sposto il conte Zighi ed essersi trasferita a Sondrio. Nino ha occasione di andare a Sondrio e rivede Anna ancora piacente. Si danno un appuntamento sulle rive del Ticino, nei luoghi del loro giovanile amore; ma in un banale incidente Anna affoga.
