An old-fashioned revival of faith sparked by a message from Mars touches an Earth under threat of nuclear war. This probably seems like a silly plot idea to a lot of modern sophisticated people. Except, this is almost what happened in Eastern Europe in our lifetime. Pushed beyond its military-industrial ability by the defense initiatives of Ronald Reagan(also a man of faith), the Soviet Bloc was pushed over the edge as people of faith in Poland, the Baltic republics, East Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Romania, and even Mother Russia herself protested and pushed toward democracy and freedom. The combination of political, economic, and spiritual forces have reshaped a continent and changed our world. The candles and prayers didn't hurt. "Well done, Simplicity!"

There certainly are elements in this film that could have been left out, and the film would have been better off for it; why the cheap monster/demon makeup?(The increasing blisters are great though..) Why having that obnoxious fatso-brother appear in the film at all? And let's face it, the special effects in places were not exactly state of the art either, neither were the editing. So why give it an 8 then? Well my rating couldn't have been any lower, and this is based solely on the fact that the film positively reeks of unique and creepy atmosphere, atmosphere so dark that I put it up there with the Kane-scenes in "Poltergeist 2", and the atmosphere in "Exorcist 3". There truly are some psychotic and memorable scenes. Two that stands out are when the mother of the family tries to " connect the dots" on Cyrus's back, the other is when she sits quietly in the living-room sowing, and then starts to jam the needle and thread into her hands! Excellent! Not to mention the infested fruit and vegetables! All in all,there is in this film a disturbed and unsettling tension that you seldom get to witness in other horror flicks of the same decade, and certainly not in contemporary and crappy Hollywood blockbusters, that's for sure. If you are just curious, rent! If you are a true horror-fan, buy!

Delicate and surreal. "A hora mágica" is a mix between a noir movie and a fantastic, surreal movie, dealing with the contrasts between reality as it is and reality as we want it to be. Life imitates art, but what life? What art? Is any of it worth it? The acting, the scenario, the timing, all promote an air of falsehood, and for a good reason: this is the land of fantasy, of desire, a place to try (and fail) to escape the roughness of real life and join the paradisiac land of the movies (or, as it is, of radio soap-operas). And this is why it also explicitly resembles a noir movie, the kind of movie that epitomizes the glamour of Hollywood. This game between reality and fantasy is paralleled to the shock originated with the arrival of TV in Brazil, rivaling radio, as TV virtually destroyed the radio soap-operas (the main character is a radio soap-opera actor). All in all, a delicate film, beautiful to the eyes and the soul, well-done technically, and with a good soundtrack. In particular, the final sequence is simply perfect, maybe among the most beautiful in the history of cinema; that sequence alone justifies recommending this film.
