Bush Mama powerfully captures the anger of America when the dream envisioned by Martin Luther King met with violent suppression and the stark reality of inner city neglect exposed by the uprising in Watts in 1965. The mesmerising performance of Barbara O. Jones shows the protagonists shift from passivity to empowerment. The film vividly conjures her interior world, a fractured reality filtered by memories and anxieties as she moves towards political consciousness following the arrest of her husband for a crime he didn't commit.

A young couple just being married rents a house in a village in Louisiana. But they are not welcome because the inhabitants of the village look at them with distrust - in the house they rented were happening strange things in the past..
Tragedy strikes each generation of an extremely unlucky family. First, a father of four is killed by his second son who is then given the death penalty. The eldest son is killed in a battle against Japanese soldiers. The third son becomes a policeman, but is killed by communist sympathisers. The fourth son kills himself during the student revolution of 1960 and his son is imprisoned in the military coup the following year.

This could almost be a documentary, it's depiction of the gay male lifestyle is so realistic. A brilliant film unlike any others in the genre. No fantasies here, just honesty (though obviously made before AIDS was an all-too common fear).
