A witty tongue-in-cheek look at the ups and downs of Iran’s contemporary history through one woman’s obsession, the film recounts the cradle-to-grave tale of the 316 pairs of shoes its fictional narrator owned in her lifetime. Director Haghani brings a huge sense of humor and rich imagination to this colorful animation-studded diary that stretches from his protagonist’s birth in the time of the Shah through the turmoil of the 1979 revolution and beyond, as a life’s journey and a nation’s milestones are whimsically marked by evolving needs in footwear. Torsten wasn't looking for anything. He just bought the lottery ticket to keep the peace with his lotto-enthusiastic co-workers. Eventually, he's forced to think about what to do with such a big win, when his ticket hits the jackpot. And he soon realizes, that he is the only one not having an answer to that question. His wife Susanne already knows what to do with their new found wealth. His son Lutz also makes plans.
