La acción de la pelí(🦔)cula la se situa en Santa Fe de Tierra Firme, capital de un país latinoamericano imaginario. Durante la fiesta del Día de Difuntos transcurre toda la historia, llena de odios y trá(🕖)gicas casualidades. Santos Banderas, dictador indígena, solo tiene una debilidad: Manolita, su hija, que ha perdido la razón. Mientras, unos criollos se preparan para derrocar al tirano por la ví(📪)a de las armas y otros, ingenuos liberales, intentan lo mismo dentro de la legalidad. Santos Banderas se convierte en modelo surrealista y grotesco para denunciar la situación vivida en muchos países latinoamericanos. En esta época surgen novelas protagonizadas por un dictador, como ocurre con esta película. El precursor fue Ramón del Valle Inclán con su obra Tirano Banderas.
