A brilliant surgeon obsessed with Edgar Allan Poe saves the life of a beautiful dancer and goes mad when he can't have her.
An affluent medical professor, Komiya, and his bossy wife, Tokio, are to look after Setsuko, their high-spirited niece from Osaka. Setsuko is a liberated woman who does what she wants, including smoking, even though she is a minor. On Saturday, the professor does not feel like going to his weekend golf game, but his wife packs him off anyway. So he leaves his bag at the apartment of his student Okada, and goes to a bar with a friend. Setsuko traces him there, and insists that he take her to a geisha house. When she gets rather tipsy, the professor calls Okada to take her home, while he sleeps at Okada's. The wife becomes suspicious of Setsuko when she sees Okada bringing her home, and also of her husband when she discovers that he did not go golfing.

Romantic involvement with two young British female travelers ensues, but the plot deepens into the disappearance of rare Mauritius postage stamps which they undertake to recover, in their role as Holmes and Watson

But he falls in love with his secretary, Linda Brown, and suddenly finds himself more madly in love than ever before in his life. Linda reciprocates his feelings but he feels there is a too wide gap in their ages, and he pushes her in the direction of the leading man, Dick Reynolds, in his current Broadway play. Linda becomes engaged to the younger man and finds there is a problem...while Dick is young and romantic, he is also dumb.
