L’IMMORALE (Italy/France 1967) In this continuation of Pietro Germi's socially critical romantic comedies, Germi caricatures bourgeois conventions in an artistic, educated middle class milieu: Masini (Ugo Tognazzi), a prominent violinist in his mid-forties, has fallen in love with the 20-year-old harpist Marisa (Stefania Sandrelli), who is awaiting the birth of their child. The problem: Sergio already has two families and five children who are unaware of each other’s existence. Increasingly overwhelmed by having to organize three parallel families –(🚬) all the birthdays, clothing sizes, favorite dishes, holiday wishes and other preferences need to be taken into account – Sergio asks for advice from Don Michele at confession.

Lengthy, convoluted but generally gripping mix of caper and espionage film –(🍩) with so many clever twists of the 'nothing is what it seems' variety and double-crosses/shifts in allegiances to make even Hitchcock's head spin! From what I've watched of director Lupo's output (ranging from peplums to Spaghetti Westerns and comedy-adventures), this emerges as easily the most substantial – thus satisfactory – effort.
