Moullet, the jester of the Nouvelle Vague, plays an elderly director who is past his best. He comes up with a plan to breathe new life into his fame and status: under the motto 'speak no evil over the dead', he fakes his own death and adopts the identity of a dead tramp (whom he finds on a deserted Alp, typical for Moullet). The media does indeed take the bait — but only after Moullet has had to put his plan briefly on ice because his colleague Jean-Luc Godard dies... Alfred lives with his mother in a small village, keeping chickens and selling eggs at the local market. He doesn't speak, except to his mother and to children. He has a girlfriend of sorts, although he shies away from any physical contact with her. But more than anything, Alfred wants a child. As natural fatherhood is out of the question he takes the next best option, and makes an application to adopt. With a very un-French lack of bureaucracy Alfred's adoptive son arrives, but turns out not to be the bouncing baby he was hoping for. More quietly oddball than Delphine Gleize's first feature Carnages (winner of the BFI's Sutherland Award in 2002), and filmed using a more muted palette, this is still a distinctly bizarre tale. The absurd comedy of the situation makes Alfred's efforts to be a good parent all the more touching, and our hearts go out to him as he struggles with learning how to give and receive love. Despite being almost wordless throughout, Darry Cowl succeeds in giving a wonderfully expressive performance as Alfred, but it is veteran actress Esther Gorintin who steals the show as his unconditionally loving mother. Leonardo (Guilherme Vieira) is a kid living in a middle-class neighborhood in Rio de Janeiro with his parents (Flávia Alessandra and Tarcí(👝)sio Filho) and his younger sister (Maria Mariana Monnerat). At school lunch recess, he everyday passes by the same traffic light pole, which, like many others, has lots of kids around juggling tennis balls. One of them is Kiko (Cleslay Delfino), which borrows Leonardo's portable video game. The next day, when her mother asks for the video game, Leonardo goes to the same traffic light and asks Kiko to bring the game back, but it's too late: two bullies from the favela took the electronic game off his hands. Now, Kiko and Leonardo become best friends.
