Diijon, a tired magician, gives up his act to study the power of the mind. His wife Victoria, once supportive, now is struggling to pay bills. She urges her stubborn and older husband to return to the magic field where Diijon was considered one of the greats. He refuses but does reluctantly agree to do a hypnotism nightclub act at Victoria's urging. The act goes bad and he's laughed off the stage. He's convinced this is the handiwork of Victoria's ex-lover Tony Holliday. Later, Diijon finds that he does indeed have the power to control men's minds and begins to take revenge on the people he felt made him look like a fool. He hypnotizes his young wife to kill the man. Unfortunately for Diijon, things go horribly wrong.
Desius Heiss is the French-born owner of an antique shop on Sly Corner who bears a grudge against society. His imprisonment and tortue on Devil's Island has left him with scars down his back from repeated whippings. With little care for the authorities, Heiss has allowed his shop to become a center of criminal activity and enjoys a secret career as a receiver of stolen goods. His daughter, Margaret, is a violin virtuoso and knows nothing of her father's criminal activities. But when the antique shop's assistant, Archie Fellowes, discovers the illicit trade in stolen goods, he threatens to blackmail Heiss. Desperate to keep his criminal activities a secret from his dauther, Heiss decides to silence the blackmailer. But when Inspector Robson takes a close interest in the shop at Sly Corner, Heiss must stay one step ahead of the police if he values his neck.

Pinkie Brown (Richard Attenborough) is a small town hoodlum who's gang run a protection racket based at Brighton race course. When Pinkie orders the murder of a rival, Fred (Alan Wheatley), the police believe it to be suicide. This doesn't convince Ida Arnold (Hermione Baddeley), who was with Fred just before he died, and she sets out to find the truth. She comes across naive waitress Rose (Carol Marsh), who can prove that Fred was murdered. In an attempt to keep Rose quiet Pinkie marries her. But with his gang beginning to doubt his ability, and his rivals taking over his business, Pinkie starts to become more desperate and violent.
