Magnat de la publicité, Edouard Martel a été choisi pour le lancement de la très touristique route Napoléon et une caravane doit semer l'enthousiasme dans les populations. Une fausse manœuvre oblige Martel à substituer au village de Malijai où l'empereur a fait halte, celui de Bourg-sur-Bleone ignoré(🉐) par Napolé(🧒)on. Le malin Martel s'y prend avec une telle adresse qu'il convainc tous les habitants du passage du grand homme et que le curé et l'instituteur, plus ou moins réticents, s'inclineront devant le succès de cette aventure moderne.

Gambler John Merrick (Frank Lovejoy) is the head of a bookie syndicate and the newspaper is crusading against him and the rackets, primarily because Merrick is in love with Felice Stuart (Joan Weldon), daughter of the newspaper publisher who can not break up the romance through persuasion. A senate committee investigating crime gets involved, the racketeers, other than Merrick who is a "nice guy", strike back and kill a reporter, and Merrick's own son, Jerry Merrick (Robert Arthur), commits suicide. Merrick, to his own disadvantage, helps bring down the syndicate. Since it is in black-and-white-, deals with crime and was an American-made film, some will call it "film noir" since that seems to be the current guidelines for putting a film in that, at one time limited-and-defined genre. 1947: Captain Jeff Eliott returns to Germany to thank the Lert family, who hid him during ww-ii when his plane was shot down over Munich. However he learns that the parents died when their house was bombed, only their daughter Wilhelmina, now 18, is still alive. He finds the pretty girl working as nightclub hostess and shortly after starts dating her. She doesn't tell him that an underground Nazi organization compels her to work for them, and soon gets Jeff involved in their machinations, too.

Another figure emerges from the shadows, lights a cigarette, then discards a crumpled cigarette pack, which the first picks up and carries home. Back in his room, the first man places the refuse on his desk, paces apprehensively about his apartment before he finally removes the inner foil and examines it.
