Jacques is a painter who divides his time between his canvasses and painting lessons he gives to the mentally ill in a nearby institution. Catherine is ill at ease in her arid, almost hostile surroundings, nurturing some unspecified dissatisfaction. Yasmine (Karin Schubert) stars as a beautiful young newlywed with a serious drug problem. Her low-life husband (Georges Gueret) uses this addiction to manipulate her, forcing her to smuggle narcotics for him and even sleep with his gangster cronies to settle his drug debts. When Yasmine catches him in bed with another woman, she steals a large quantity of his heroin and goes on the run with the smugglers in deadly pursuit. Tragedy strikes each generation of an extremely unlucky family. First, a father of four is killed by his second son who is then given the death penalty. The eldest son is killed in a battle against Japanese soldiers. The third son becomes a policeman, but is killed by communist sympathisers. The fourth son kills himself during the student revolution of 1960 and his son is imprisoned in the military coup the following year. Fiftysomething dental surgeon Franç(🔮)ois (Robert Stack) leaves his loving wife and three children in order to enjoy a life free of responsibility, beginning a relationship with a much younger woman, Catherine (Anicée Alvina), who confesses that she is also having an affair with Marc (Fré(😷)déric Meisner), a motorcycle-riding man her own age. Undeterred, François befriends Marc and gets his own motorcycle, but when he suffers an accident, he is forced to confront the limitations of his aging body and the reality of his waning youth, harsh realities counterposed to undying hope in this frank, human film.
