Filmmaker Alex Harty, 29, has always considered himself a "tortured artist"-but it's not until his wife dies in a car accident that he learns the term's true meaning. Still saddled with grief two years after her death, Alex's once-promising career has come to a standstill. After assaulting a movie producer with a Mont Blanc pen in Los Angeles, Alex returns to his hometown of San Francisco with little more than his beloved Mercury Comet, and a tape recording of his wife's last phone message. Once in the Bay Area, Alex re-acquaints himself with a wide array of characters, including a photographer who's stalking her ex-boyfriend, a fetish-hungry former classmate, a San Francisco socialite who fancies herself as a patron of the arts, a wedding band singer turned performance artist, a flashy City Supervisor who aspires to be the next JFK, Jr., and the now grown-up French girl who spent her childhood summers as his neighbor. Several misadventures, including a comical car accident, a series of failed pranks and a minor earthquake, culminate in Alex reaching a clearer understanding of his grief, one that allows him to break through his "torture" and return to his art. An unseen man recalls four days of his youth when he came of age. He is Simon, in mid teens, in awe of his father who's planned a robbery with the down-and-out Fury. Dad double-crosses Fury, using Simon in a switch of the bag of cash. Unknown to Simon, however, a bank guard later shoots dad dead and wounds Fury. Simon leaves Ontario, as planned, heading for a remote Qué(🤶)bec town. When Fury discovers the money gone, he follow Simon with the aid of Simon's neighbor, Feather, who's been dad's lover. En route to Quebec, Simon is picked up by Chrystal, a wild woman who's just left her husband. They all meet beside a lake for a final sorting out of money and relationships.
Two toughs from the wrong side of the tracks in Manchester, choose different paths when they are released from prison. The quiet Ray wants out of the 'gangsta' life and into the local music scene with his pals, while his brash, emotional partner Terry wants to dominate the city's criminal community. His strange fixation with Ray and his pathological need for respect that he cannot show to others in return, lead him to make some impulsive moves that result in violent death and tragedy for all concerned.

An anthropologist from an alien planet provides voice-over commentary for a documentary look at human courtship, mating, and reproduction: "complex, perverse, tragically beautiful: the earthbound human." The commentary gets some of the details comically wrong (explaining the slap on a newborn's back: "they don't like the looks of the child so they beat it"), but gets right the overall idea. We follow Billy and Jenny from their meeting at a club, initial misunderstandings, his losing her phone number, finally connecting, walks on the beach, soulful talks, meeting each other's parents, friends' advice, and the gradual taking of the relationship to new levels.
