After Aditya Roy, the Assistant Editor of a magazine, suffers a heart attack for a third time, his wife, Leela, has him taken by ambulance to Mumbai's Lilavati Hospital, where he is placed in the Intensive Cardiac Care Unit. While she anxiously awaits the prognosis, she meets with the wife, Shirin, and son, Altaf, of yet another patient, Shaukat Ali, an underworld gangster, who has suffered his first heart attack. Both women are drawn to each other in their sorrow and despair knowing fully well that their spouses may not live for long, and both may not be ready to accept the changes that are yet to come in their respective lives.
Marple is visiting an old school friend, Lady Camilla Tressilian, along with an eclectic group: Neville Strange and his wife Kay, his former wife Audrey and her childhood friend and cousin Thomas Royde, Ted Latimer and finally Freddie Treves, a retired solicitor. When Treves is found dead the day after a dinner party at Lady Tressilian's home and Lady Tressilian herself is found bludgeoned to death a short time later, Miss Marple must sort through the complex set of relationships among all the players, and determine what role the tale of a child's crime may have had to play in the deaths.
