Jean Lerat de la Grignotière is as full of himself as his name is long. Heeding (somewhat reluctantly to be true) the call of the Motherland he goes to the barracks where he is to accomplish his military duty. Posted to Corporal Bourrache's platoon he is surprised to meet there...Joseph, his own servant. Making blunder after blunder Jean gets hazed by his comrades and punished by his officers while Joseph's adaptation to military life is as smooth as can be. All this does not prevent the young snob from courting Catherine, the colonel's daughter, not very successfully at the beginning. Things start shaping better when he accepts to play a part in "Tire-au-flanc", Mouëzy-Eon's famed comedy. Living in the remote tropics are two oil explorers, one of whom is married to a very attractive woman. One night, she tries to stab her husband and he is convinced by his partner that she is sick with tropical fever. They agree that she needs to see a head shrinker. En route to the doctor however, she convinces her husband's partner to help her kill the husband. Fortunately, the husband's trusted manservant is also with them and protects his master's interests in a very unusual way.
The big top is once again the setting for lover's quarrels and jealousies in this strictly routine, somewhat old-fashioned tale by director Rovira Beleta. After the Spanish circus' sharp-shooter recruits a pretty Hungarian refugee as an assistant in his act, it does not take long for romance to blossom and eventually, to be sealed with an engagement. While the circus performer is happily looking forward to marital bliss, his intended bride inexplicably falls out of love with him and in love with his friend. He sees this as a betrayal of trust on both their parts and plans a violent revenge.
