During the rule of the Taliban in Afghanistan about 3 million Afghans, who were mostly illegal immigrants, entered Iran; causing numerous problems for the Iranian society to accept them. This film is the story of a 17 year old rural girl by the name of Mahi, who comes from a war-stricken family in the southern Iran. Mahi falls in love with an Afghan student named Hairan, who has come to their village to work. But Mahi's family being strictly against her marriage to an Afghan, forces Mahi to choose one between her family and an Afghan lad. Originally produced in 1981-1982, and intended as a prime-time TV special for ABC. The project was shelved after negative reaction by H-B and Taft executives to the film's graphic imagery, particularly relating to the 1960s and the Vietnam War. The film was retooled in the mid-80s, with a new sequence featuring classic Hanna-Barbera cartoon clips set to "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go." To date, the film has only had one public screening in the United States, at the 2nd Los Angeles International Animation Celebration in July 1987 The most important and prolific of all American women directors of the silent era, Lois Weber entered films in 1907 at Gaumont, working alongside Alice Guy-Blaché. In the ensuing years, she and her husband Phillips Smalley acted in, directed, wrote and edited films for Gaumont, Rex and Universal.
