The story is about two couples, one whose the marriage - and the baby - are hidden to the husband's father. Après avoir fait fortune en Extrême-Orient, l'armateur Forest a ouvert une banque à Marseille. Il est le tuteur de l'orpheline Madeleine Wills, dont il convoite le coeur. Lors d'une promenade en auto, celle-ci renverse malencontreusement un Chinois nommé(🍦) Tchang Keou. Madeleine le fait soigner et lui trouve une place de domestique au service de Paul Valmont, dont elle est amoureuse. Tchang Keou est en réalité à la recherche de l'homme qui, armé d'une é(🍠)pingle rouge, a assassiné son pè(🛡)re parce qu'il avait été témoin du meurtre du père de Madeleine par Forest. Ses soupçons se portent d'abord sur Valmont puis il comprend la vérité(⛑). Forest se sert du Chinois pour enlever Madeleine. Prévenu, Paul Valmont vient à son secours. Tchang Keou tient enfin sa vengeance. Il tue Forest avec l'épingle rouge puis se donne la mort.
