Jones here is portrayed as Bill Willis, a former war hero and now successful author who obviously drinks too much and is starting to experience health problems. Living in France with his wife, daughter, and an adopted son, the family travels an unconventional road that leaves all of them as outsiders to others. Preaching a sexual freedom, his daughter's sexual acceptance begins at an early age and betrays her when the family moves to Hanover in America. Her sexuality is definitely not the normal for American teens and gives her a bad reputation and outcasts her. Meanwhile her brooding brother struggles with his own inner turmoils about his early desertion in life. Zobel and his daughter Lizzie, connected with funfair and sideshow life, but essentially pickpockets by trade, live in a van with Zobel's ageing lover. He is finding his job as third man of the team too hard to deal with. A replacement is found in Rudolf, a young and attractive garage mechanic with a sideline in purse snatching, and the film charts the ups and downs of a whole series of relationships as both father and daughter vie for Rudolf's affections. Andy is a writer for newspaper classifieds who has been bouncing from relationship-to-relationship since sixth grade. Throughout the film, he loses custody of his dog when his girlfriend, Cheryl, breaks up with him for another man. Andy then meets Lorna, a children's TV show host, but she is too obsessed with her own dog to commit to a relationship with Andy. She's also still smiting because her boyfriend Trevor, left her for Andy's ex, Cheryl. Dalziel almost witnesses a shooting which two witnesses claim was a beautiful woman trying to commit suicide by shooting herself in the face. He is convinced it is murder. Ironically, Dalziel and his suspect (Philip Swain) are cast in a cathedral mystery play as God and the devil, respectively. A young missing husband, a series of letters to Dalziel by an intended suicide, heroin in the autopsy, changes in testimony, and bodies buried in concrete add to the drama facing Dalziel and Pascoe.
