Into their midst rushes Jeong-hui (Ha Yu-mi), who is fleeing from the latest round of her husband's constant physical abuse. When her husband Seong-gu comes after her with his fists flying, the women rally together and give him a sound beating. Unfortunately, Seong-gu dies in the ambulance on his way to the hospital, and the police try to take the neighborhood women into custody for murder. Bewildered, the women jostle to and fro before eventually finding their way to the rooftop of an apartment building. Thus, the rooftop becomes the site of a last stand for ten women, including Geyong-suk (Sohn Suk), an aspiring novelist in her late forties; Ki-sun (Lee Jin-sun), a single woman engaged in an affair with Yeong-hui's father; Yeong-hui's mother (Song Ok-suk), who consequently harbors deep resentment toward Ki-sun; Eun-ju's mother (Kim Bo-yeon), who heads the women residents' association and likes to put herself forward; Pohang-daek (Lim Hee-suk), a fifty-something woman who delivers Chinese food; Yun-hui (Jeong Seon-kyeong), who works as a hostess in a bar; and Yu-mi, a cabaret singer who has helped Jeong-hui up to the roof. The group becomes anxious when a special police strike force is deployed for their capture, but after a while they decide to take a firm stance against their would-be-captors. Just at that moment, an incompetent twosome of burglars (Lee Kyeong-young, Kim Min-jong) who were in the middle of breaking into an empty apartment see the throng of police gathered in the courtyard. They mistake themselves for the police's intended quarry and attempt to flee in terror, but end up trapped in the empty apartment, hemmed in on all sides. The story of emigrants in New York, more precisely in poor part of Brooklyn, of Serb Baja and Spaniard Alfonso and their tragicomic efforts to fit so-called New World. Bajo works illegally by day, and by night helps Alfonso at the bar. He lives at Alfonso's place with a small rooster from Yugoslavia. The rooster's crowing at dawn awakens homesickness in Alfonso's blind moher, and Bajo's longing for his three children, taken care of by his mother, far away, somewhere on the Serbian-Montenegrian border, not realizing that they are already on their way for America. During that trip, Bajo's younger son loses his life in mythical river, Rio Grande. His older son fits new life conditions perfectly. Impractical ones, old mothers, middle-aged sons and lost love will vanish in unreal world of American illusions... Ajay Chauhan lives with his parents and younger sister. He is in love with Pooja, and hopes to marry her someday. His father wants him to get a job and settle down, and then get married. Ajay applies for a job in Bombay, and soon receives a letter asking him to appear for an interview. He attends the interview, and is hired. Delighted to see all his dreams coming true, he goes to offer his thanks to God, and it is there a woman named Pratika Jetley sees him and notifies the police that he is indeed the one who had brutally raped three young women in a college campus. Ajay vehemently denies this, but is personally identified and criminally held responsible, convicted and sentenced to prison. Several years later he is released from prison, and finds out that his father and Pooja had committed suicide while his mother and sister are untraceable. He sets out to put his life together and meets with a ruthless police inspector, whose daughter was one of the rape victims.
