Ian Struan Dunross is chairman of Struan & Company, the oldest and largest of the British-East Asia trading companies. To the Chinese, that also makes him "Tai-Pan" ("supreme leader") of the "Noble House". Unfortunately, with his power, he inherits ancient promises, dark secrets, and deep financial problems on a small island full of people, who want to see Struan fall, so they can become the Noble House. Dunross' worst enemy is the vicious Quillan Gornt, a lesser tai-pan, and he's doing everything in his power to bring the Noble House to ruin. Drawn into the fight between Gornt and Dunross, is an upstart American billionaire, who tries to gain a foothold on the Hong Kong market, and has made a deal to steal something that will give him power, even over the Noble House. Unfortunately, that something has fallen into the hands of a powerful Chinese overlord. "Everybody was watching (and cheating on) everybody." Who will succeed in the end?

Set in the weeks just prior to Christmas, the story focuses on the Yuletide preparations made by five different families. The humor derives from the communication gap between the elder family members and their bewildering offspring. The powerhouse cast is headed by Vittorio de Sica and Marcello Mastrioanni.
Der Südtiroler Bergsteiger und Schauspieler Luis Trenker ist bereits ein bekannter Mann, als er die ehrgeizige, junge Ausdruckstänzerin Leni Riefenstahl bei Dreharbeiten des Bergfilm-Pioniers Arnold Fanck kennen und lieben lernt. Als die karrierebewusste Riefenstahl mit einem Kollegen anbandelt, beendet Trenker die Beziehung. In den folgenden Jahren entspinnt sich ein künstlerischer Machtkampf zwischen den beiden rivalisierenden Filmemachern. Mit Filmen wie "Der Rebell" und "Der verlorene Sohn" avanciert Trenker aber schnell zum Star des deutschen Kinos, gefördert von seinen Bewunderern Goebbels und Hitler. Erst als Trenker, vom Erfolg beflügelt und seine Freiheiten immer weiter ausreizend, erkennt, in welche Abhä(🐑)ngigkeiten er sich begeben hat, wendet sich das Blatt. Von Goebbels "kaltgestellt" beginnt Trenkers langsamer Abstieg, von dem er sich auch nach Kriegsende nie mehr ganz erholen wird...
