Morse and Lewis investigate the disappearance of teenager Valerie Craven who vanished some six months previously while walking home from her exclusive girls school. Morse is the third detective assigned to the case and is convinced that the girl is by now dead. However, the girl's parents receive a note, purportedly from Valerie. Suspicion falls on a number of people, including fellow students, men named in her diary and some of the teachers at her school. But he rather falls in love with her mother, Paula, who is also a teacher at that school. At first she does not respond to his love but when her husband, who is also a teacher at that school, is not too interested in her anymore she starts the adventure not knowing that Gabriel has already broken the heart of her best friend. The story cumulates when Gabriel and Paula lead the trip of Emma's class to the city of love: Paris. Helena is a recently graduated attorney that shares her routine between her job as a Public Defender of children and adolescents in the Forum of the city of Santos, Brazil, and the care of the teenager Caio, with whom she lives a harmonic and honest life.
