After the death of her husband, Lilia's life revolves solely around her teenage daughter, Salma. Whilst looking for Salma late one night, Lilia stumbles upon a belly dance cabaret and though initially reserved and taken aback by the culture of the place, Lilia gets consistently drawn back to it. She befriends one of the belly dancers and is encouraged into dancing for the audience. Lilia also starts a romance with one of the cabaret's musicians, who unbeknown to both of them, is also romancing Salma.
Set against the backdrop of the turbulent period in the late 60's leading up to Bangladesh's independence from Pakistan, Matir Moina (The Clay Bird) tells the story of a family torn apart by religion and war. A young boy, Anu, is sent off to a strict Islamic school, or madrasa, by his deeply religious father Kazi.As the political divisions in the country intensify, an increasing split develops between moderate and extremist forces within the madrasa, mirroring a growing divide between the stubborn but confused Kazi and his increasingly independent wife. Touching upon themes of religious tolerance, cultural diversity, and the complexity of Islam, Matir Moina has universal relevance in a crisis-ridden world.

15-year-old Paule leads a wild life on the streets of Berlin. Together with Arnel, 12, who dreams of returning to his home in Bosnia, he shoplifts in department stores and mugs passersby in expensive shopping streets. Everything changes when Paule robs 18-year-old Julia and falls in love with her. He follows her and gives her back the things he stole from her, pretending to be older than he really is. The girl, who has enjoyed a sheltered upbringing, soon feels equally attracted to Paule, his cheeky charm, and the exciting world he inhabits. But when Arnel is tortured by his cousin's gang and severely injured, she realizes how dangerous and alien that world is. Paule, too, is drawn ever deeper into the conflict between his old life and the life he dreams of. Paule puts up a struggle, but in the end this conflict leads him into a catastrophe with fatal consequences.
