Ok, folks, this is my last Ishii upload. Totsugeki! Hakata gurentai is his first feature and last 8mm film. Haven't watched it yet myself, but from the looks of it, this is very much reminescent of eighties and nineties v-cinema, sort of like early Miike (only made in 1978). There is considerably more dialogue than in his earlier films, but it doesn't seem too complicated plotwise.
The most important and prolific of all American women directors of the silent era, Lois Weber entered films in 1907 at Gaumont, working alongside Alice Guy-Blaché. In the ensuing years, she and her husband Phillips Smalley acted in, directed, wrote and edited films for Gaumont, Rex and Universal. By 1914, Weber was a well-known director when she went to work for the Bosworth Company to make Hypocrites.
In this engaging drama of suspense and intrigue, Lambusca (José Dumont) is an innocent Brazilian from the northwestern region of the country who comes into Sao Paulo looking for work and finds trouble in the process. When Lambusca finally lands a job as a loan collector, he does not realize he is actually working for a local version of organized crime until one of his clients dies of a heart attack. That death puts Lambusca on the most-wanted list of the police, the mob, and some unsavory thugs -- all of them experienced enough to track down almost anyone. This film won the prize for "Best Film," "Best Director," and "Best Actor" at the 1984 Gramado Film Festival in Brazil.
