Pierre Marsac, a French engineer working for the Nagasaki shipbuilding yards, has fallen in love both with Japan and a charming Japanese girl named Noriko. In the 1950s Neo-realism style was given a boost, in part by what was happening in Italy. The films of Rossellini, Antonioni and De Sica made a powerful impression on Brazil's nascent film community. A series of pivotal pictures were made in the 1950s that responded to the wake-up call of the new Italian masters. Needle in a Haystack (1953) by Alex Viany, The Road (1957) by Oswaldo Sampaio and The Great Moment (1958) by Roberto Santos are a few of the better titles. Joe Kedzie is released from prison after committing a robbery. Only Joe knows where the money is hidden: at the bottom of a mine shaft out in the desert. Maxie and Madge find Joe when he goes to retrieve the money. He agrees to cut them in. Maxie gets greedy and Joe shoots him. Unfortunately, he also puts a hole in their only canteen. Joe lowers himself down the mineshaft with a rope to retrieve the money. He ties the money to the rope and sends it up. When he tries to climb out, Madge cuts the rope and he falls and breaks his leg. Madge tries to get away, but discovers that Joe has the keys to the truck.
