Martin Ross is a district attorney with a fighting chance at his party's nomination for governor. But Martin's brother, Richard, wants him to have more than a fighting chance. So, as the other candidate takes a shower at his country club, Richard walks in with a gun and a silencer and walks out with one less bullet. The sheriff calls Martin and tells him the news of the murder. Later, he has a suspect: the victim's teenage caddy. But Martin already knows his brother is the real murderer. And Richard takes Martin's wife hostage to ensure than no one else finds out. Toho's first anamorphic widescreen feature Baptiste Lachaud, known affectionately as Tistin, is the only man in the village of Clochemerle not to have a job. With the help of the local mayor, he gets himself registered as unemployed, so that not only can he carry on doing nothing but he will also be paid for doing so. Understandably, the villagers do not take kindly to this development, and are even more outraged when Tistin uses his easily earned money to get drunk in the company of Zozotte, a woman of bad reputation. To redeem himself, Tistin begins to undertake odd jobs for his neighbours, particularly, Jeannette, a young widow who soon develops a fondness for him. But then some money goes missing from the church and Tistin is the obvious culprit, since he has just deposited a large sum of money into a new bank account... A criminal gang plots the robbery of a ship carrying $2 million worth of surplus narcotics left over from World War II. But for each story he writes, he first approaches the person whose scandalous behavior is described (or rather implied, to avoid any libel suit) and says he will suppress the story in return for money. Several of his victims first decide individually to kill him instead of paying, but fail in amusing ways. Then they find that to protect their various secrets they must now join forces for a rather different purpose... Janice is a beautiful 17 year old who longs to be free from the influence of her guardian Aunt May. She also wants to get out of the small town she's in. She asks her boyfriend Stan to marry her so that they can run away. Since he doesn't have a job, he keeps putting of the marriage. Janice do something herself. She meets a man named Tex and lures him home for a drink. When she hears a car outside she starts fighting with Tex. She rips her clothes and knocks over furniture. A policeman who sees Janice with Tex enters the house. Upon entering the house, he discovers Aunt May's body. Janice tells the policeman that Tex killed her. The policeman accepts the girl's story. Then, however, Stan arrives. Having gotten a job he had come by the house to take Janice away. He found Aunt May's body lying in the spot where Janice left it after pushing her down the stairs. The marital difficulties of four couples living in a southern California housing development become intertwined. Among the unhappy couples are ne'er-do-well Jerry Flagg and his long-suffering wife Isabelle, flirtatious Leola Boone and her sadistic husband Troy, hard working Herman Kreitzer and his understanding wife Betty, and newlyweds Jean and David Martin.
