1947: Captain Jeff Eliott returns to Germany to thank the Lert family, who hid him during ww-ii when his plane was shot down over Munich. However he learns that the parents died when their house was bombed, only their daughter Wilhelmina, now 18, is still alive. He finds the pretty girl working as nightclub hostess and shortly after starts dating her. Felice is a fraudster and a womaniser who escaped from a Naples prison with his cell-mate, a pick-pocket named Faina (Aldo Giuffrè). The duo, now on the run, rob a foreigner who turns out to be a Turkish eunuch sent by the government to the house of Don Pasquale (Carlo Campanini), a wealthy and jealous Sorrento merchant, to guard his attractive wife Giulietta (Isa Barzizza) and his daughter Listetta (Primarosa Battistella) in exchange for the votes of his local constituents. Don Felice assumes the identity of the eunuch which provides much of the film's comedy. After being released from prison, former gun-fighter John Wesley Hardin hopes to have his autobiography published in order to rehabilitate his tarnished reputation. Carl Martin is a morose and deranged Los Angeles gardener, who,in retribution for the infidelity of his unfaithful wife, sets about to kill as many blonde's as he can. From the time the film opens, to the sound of a radio turned up full-blast over the still-warm corpse of a blonde, the audience knows the identity of the killer. The film depicts, with documentary realism as it was shot on location in and around Los Angeles, how the police, using laboratory techniques against the few clues they have, track down Martin. Their key clue is a spring from a pair of garden shears.
