Soon, star Frank Burt notices her talent, hires her for a "two-act", then marries her. Incidents of the marriage and the growing pains of eldest daughter Iris are followed, interspersed with nostalgic musical numbers Inspired by the radio program of the same name, Night Editor features Charles D. Brown as the editor of the New York Star. In flashback, the editor tells the tale of police lieutenant William Gargan, who forsakes his happy home life for the love of no-good society dame Janis Carter. Both Gargan and Carter begin cheating on their respective spouses, and while on a romantic rendezvous the couple witnesses a murder. They can't report the crime without revealing their own infidelities, a dilemma which leads to blackmail, double-crossing and a second murder attempt. A twist ending caps this snappy little 65-minute morality play. The script of Night Editor was based on the story "Inside Story" by Scott Littleton, previously dramatized on the Night Editor radio series. ~ Hal Erickson, All Movie Guide Susanne Wallner returns to the ruins of Berlin from a Concentration Camp after WW2 to discover that someone else lives in her apartment: Dr. Hans Mertens, the war made him depressive and he drinks a lot of alcohol. Susanne asks him to go but he doesn't want to, so they share Susanne's apartment and even discover their sympathy and then their love for each other. That encourages him a little, of course. But then he hears that Ferdinand Brückner is still alive and also lives in Berlin. Brückner was his Captain during WW2, he gave the order to kill more than 100 innocent people, many children and women among them, on Christmas 1942 in Poland. A virtuous Spanish princess becomes Queen of Portugal, then troubled by social struggles and court intrigue. She negotiates a truce between the king's and his son's factions; and performs a miracle, by changing bread into roses, to appease the king's ire, has he had forbidden her to distribute bread to the poor peasants. She arrives in bombed-out postwar Berlin in 1947 as part of a congressional delegation assigned to investigate the moral behavior of the American occupying troops. As part of her mission, she delivers a cake baked by his fiancee to Capt. John Pringle (John Lund), who immediately trades it on the black market for a mattress, which he takes to the apartment of his current girlfriend, Erika von Schluetow (Marlene Dietrich), an alluring German nightclub singer. While touring the city, researching the G.I.s appetite for blond German women and alcohol, Phoebe, mistaken for a German, is picked up by some of the soldiers and taken to a club which features the singing of Erika. When she sees a familiar cake being served, she becomes suspicious and orders John to watch the woman's apartment to identify her American lover. After seeing some newsreel footage of Erika with Hitler, Phoebe asks John to show her the woman's file, but he distracts her from further investigation by coming on to the congresswoman, who responds with surprising passion. A comedy edged with cruelty, it features one of Dietrich's quintessential performances.
