Script to this film is based on a short novel written by Jerzy Andrzejewski - the same author who wrote "Ashes and Diamonds". Wajda want to do "Holy Week" for years. First version of script was made by Andrzej Ż(😢)uławski (polish director) and Jerzy Andrzejewski in 1968, but topic of Jews in Poland in this time was highly unwanted (infulence of government). Wajda sold rights to script to German producers. After years he can back to his project and complete it in year 1995.
