Diogène Leguignon is a modest railway worker for whom things seldom tend to go right.Having been expelled from his home, he and his wife are forced into a rundown house in a less desirable part of town. Unknown to Leguignon, a band of local children have discovered a stash of treasure and keep it concealed under the floorboards in his house. When Leguignon attempts to claim ownership of the treasure, he ends up in court and is branded a thief. When he is released from jail, he persuades his neighbours to use the money gained from the sale of the treasure to build a new housing estate. But to raise the extra capital to complete the project, Leguignon has to turn to some very unscrupulous bankers... Vintage musical comedy about a lonely Texas heiress in Paris who masquerades as a member of a model troupe on a luxury voyage, hoping to find a man who likes her for something besides her money. But the man hired by her over-zealous guardian to protect her claims that he loves her, in spite of her wealth. Made originally in 3-D, the film features an early appearance by Kim Novak. Despite its ebullient title and the presence of lightweight dancing star Dan Dailey, Meet Me at the Fair has a lot more meat on its bones than most musicals of the early 1950s. Dailey plays an early-1900s medicine show huckster who finds himself the reluctant guardian of orphanage escapee Chet Allen. As he grows fond of the boy, Dailey becomes determined to thwart the corrupt system that allows substandard orphan asylums to operate while political hacks get rich on government funding. Dailey wins the confidence (and love) of orphan committee member Diana Lynn, who helps to foil the machinations of crooked district attorney Hugh O'Brien. The darker aspects of Meet Me at the Fair are lightened by director Douglas Sirk's marvelous recreations of backstage life at the turn of the century.
