The widow Elena Palumbo is the mother of two sons, Francesco and Paolo, who live with their mother on a farm they run. However, their land serves, for construction speculation, to Roberto De Michelis, willing to do anything to become its owner. After forbidding his daughter Angela to attend Paolo, whom she is in love with, De Michelis does not hesitate to have the latter killed, who in the meantime has enlisted in the Carabinieri and is on duty in Naples . Arriving to know the identity of the instigator of his brother's death, Francesco decides to avenge the death of Paul at all costs. After the Allies liberate Naples in 1943, the life for the locals is not much easier, especially for women. He has however a detachment to life that some would find admirable, some would find strange. He and his wife live in an "open" relationship, they are quite loving and seem to have a strong relationship, but she has a young lover while he quite happily seems to stay at home reading a book when shes out. Lou, the junkie prostitute is quite puzzled, even surprised about this aspect of their relationship. He is fairly unshockable, not at all condemning of the prostitute and her lifestyle. But Lou has a very lonely life,and is looking for someone to reach out to. A quirky film from the master, John Duigan.
