Pinkie Brown (Richard Attenborough) is a small town hoodlum who's gang run a protection racket based at Brighton race course. When Pinkie orders the murder of a rival, Fred (Alan Wheatley), the police believe it to be suicide. This doesn't convince Ida Arnold (Hermione Baddeley), who was with Fred just before he died, and she sets out to find the truth. She comes across naive waitress Rose (Carol Marsh), who can prove that Fred was murdered. In an attempt to keep Rose quiet Pinkie marries her. But with his gang beginning to doubt his ability, and his rivals taking over his business, Pinkie starts to become more desperate and violent.
Filmed in 16 mm, primarily intended for the school/institutional and home-rental, the plot has Abner Snell running for councilman in a small town. He accidentally becomes the "Mystery Lady" on a radio show after his deep bass voice becomes a strange, haunting falsetto following an attack of laryngitis, and earns a few extra dollars as such. He explains his sudden affluence to his sweetheart, Alice Tinkerton, by jokingly telling her he has robbed a bank, but not knowing that the Elmwood Bank has just been held up. Abner finally wins the girl and the election, after capturing the real bank robbers.

Two years after her husband's death, Christine Faber (Lynn Bari) thinks she hears her late husband (Donald Curtis) calling out of the surf on the beach one night. She meets a tall dark man named Alexis (Turhan Bey) who seems to know all about her.
Homicide detective Mike Carter is tossed off the police force for insubordination and violating regulations. He reluctantly takes a job as bodyguard to Mrs. Gene Dysen, the owner of a local meat-packing plant. In investigating threats against her life, Carter begins unraveling the murder of a meat inspector at the plant, but not before he himself is framed for the murder of his former supervisor on the police force.
