As Doctor Hugo Arranz (Paul Naschy) celebrates his fiftieth birthday with his wife and her daughter, a group of delinquents forces their way into their home, violating and murdering both women, and brutally cutting out the tongue of Dr. Arranz, leaving him mute. After being released from in the hospital, he can only think about taking revenge upon the criminals who destroyed his family. Gloriously self-aggrandizing moviemaker Tom Palazzolo made an awesome feature debut with Caligari’s Cure. If you know your Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, you’ll remember that the orgasm of the 1919 German movie revealed that the ostensive villain had been really a psychiatrist, and the moderate hero a certified looney. Palazzolo uses generous chunks of Caligari, evaluating the expressionistic opposites of the previous film’(🌚)s director Robert Wiene with contemporary artistic developments. It’s a fairly obvious stylistic workout, but it’s simply because entertaining as Palazzolo’s hallucinatory quick topics. Caligari’(🏪)s Cure would make a felicitous double feature with the 1988 shorts set Palazzolo’s Chicago. Whatever it is, there's nothing you can't tell the woman you love. Totally unawares, Saverio, a teacher and Mario, a janitor of the same school in which they both work, travel back in time and find themselves in central Italy at the end of the 15th century. They carry with them an unresolved squabble concerning Saverio's sister, creating a lot of tension between the two, which will increase in the plot. From this moment on they will have to come to grips with the grotesque situation they find themselves in, trying to "hitch a lift" back to the future in a most outlandish way, using and misusing their foresight of the events taking place round that time, and generally making fools of themselves in the eyes of "normal" renaissance folks. Their meeting with Leonardo da Vinci is hysterical, when they become more and more convinced that the genius is in reality a moron. Another character they meet is Savonarola the heretic, who enjoins them to repent, before he is taken to the stake, eliciting some breezy comment from them.
