In attempting to develop a chemical which would make a person super-intelligent, Dr. Montrose fails and the subjects of his experiments metamorphose into hideous monsters who band together and prey on humans. With the police stymied, a young detective attempts to track down the leader of the group of killers, known only to have a small crimson stain in one eye. In pre-WW1 England, a youngster is expelled from a naval academy over a petty theft, but his parents raise a political furor by demanding a trial. Sixth chapter picks up about two weeks after the previous chapter's end, and the trail has gone cold. Another murder in Fontainebleau, possibly by Les Vampires, puts Phillipe on their trail again. Irma Vep and another are soon spotted at a nearby theatre, and followed by Phillipe. Retrieval of a parcel left for Les Vampires informs them that The Grand Vampire is hiding at a hotel under an assumed name, and of a $200.000 robbery of an American. The hotel is located and, ultimately is discovered to be the base of operations of Les Vampires. What appears to be green-tinted bullfighting footage seems out of place. Sepia-tinted scene of Irma Vep rummaging about in hotel room is creepy looking, she is then captured and held for ransom by Moreno-- but the serial is wearing a bit thin now, with treasure maps and hypnotism being thrown into the plot, and the chapters are not only getting more convoluted, but also longer. The plot follows the novel more closely than does any other Tarzan movie. John and Alice Clayton take ship for Africa. Mutineers maroon them. After his parents die the newborn Tarzan is taken by a great Ape, Kala. Later the boy finds his father's knife and uses it to become King of Apes. Binns, the sailor who saved the Claytons and who has been held by Arab slavers for ten years, finds the young Tarzan and then heads for England to notify his kin. A scientist arrives to check out Binns' story. Tarzan, now a man, kills the native who killed Kala; when their chief is killed the black villagers appease Tarzan with gifts and prayers. But when the man wins against all expectations, the women lure him to an apartment, rob him and then murder him. The middle-class man followed the women and when the police arrive, they arrest him as a suspect. In desperation he contemplates suicide in his prison cell, but just in the nick of time, the real killers are found. The man who was just looking for a new experience then meekly returns home where his wife, without a word, serves him the warmed up soup from the night before. A French captain persuades a rich widow to become his mistress, but it is a scheme to test her love.
