A friend of mine had rented "Shiner" only because the clerks at his local video store were talking about "how much of a bigot the director is," implying that homophobia was at the root of the film (apparently these folks never watched the special features on the DVD, which totally negates that opinion). My friend took the video home and reported to me his fascination with the film; at the same time, he felt aroused, repulsed, intrigued and frightened during and after the flick. He told me about the premise of the film, and felt somewhat ashamed for finding some of its darker content erotic.

Minh-ha and artist Jean Paul Bourdier (REASSEMBLAGE, THE FOURTH DIMENSION, A TALE OF LOVE, SHOOT FOR THE CONTENTS, SURNAME VIET GIVEN NAME NAM). This provocative digital tale tells the story of three young friends traveling for a brief moment together on the train between life and death. Their journey into and out of the land of ‘awakened dreams’ occurs on a long ride on a night train. Ingeniously framed through the train window, filmmaker Trinh T. Minh-ha and artist Jean Paul Bourdier create whimsical and sensual dreamscapes, which is matched by an equally beautiful and other-worldly music score. Once again, Minh-ha shifts the way she engages with the form and the spirit of the cinema—(🌆)to challenge and provoke her audience.
The village of Kaminoe is an idyllic haven of flower filled meadows and tranquil wooded glades surrounded by majestic towering peaks. Once a year, on Mountain Day, the local community gather in the fields to pray to the god of the mountain, with the ranks of local boys dressed in white choirboy smocks delivering an al fresco version of The Hallelujah Chorus against the cherry-blossomed backdrop as the highpoint of the celebrations. The tradition stretches back way into the hazy mists of time, though none of the locals can remember when.
