Dante (De Rienzo), sick of his dreary existence, takes off abroad with the hope of never returning - first 'borrowing' money from the Mob. Nina, an under appreciated airhostess, inadvertently stranded in Dante's city, is staying in Dante's vacant apartment. However, when he unexpectedly returns home one night, and exhaustedly slips into bed, Nina is in it! Sure, it's a simple trifle in film history, if even that, and seeing Sangue di sbirro today is at best mildly entertaining. For although made in the heyday of the Italian crime genre this one is no zenith. Dan Caputo (George Eastman of dubious Antropophagus-fame) arrives in New York to avenge the death of his father, a cop involved with the mafia. Dan clears up the murder (and kills what seem like some 30 people) with help of local mob boss Duke (Jack Palance) and then flies back to wherever he came from. Possibly there is a bit more to the story, but the script is so confused so there is little point in trying to describe the goings-on. Suffice to say there is a little romance, brief scenes childhood reminiscing, and a helluva lot of shoot outs. Some of which are quite exiting in a cheapo euro trash way. The highlight of the film is definitely the opening scene at the airport when Dan arrives during some sort of terrorist attack simply to shoot his way through it. All in all it's not a badly done revenge film technically, and it's clichéd in the best sense of the word, but it suffers from some seriously dragging scenes, and a poorly executed whodunit sub plot, which slows the whole thing down. Only recommended for the die-hard fan of Italian 70's crime films. Lewis returns to Oxford after several years absence and is reluctantly assigned by his new boss, DCS Innocent, to the murder of an Oxford mathematics student who was shot while participating in a sleep study. The key-code used to access the sleep lab was assigned to a fellow maths student, Daniel Griffin, but Daniel's math tutor has provided him with an alibi. Daniel is a maladjusted young man who will soon inherit his father's automotive empire. He is disruptive and has no respect for his uncle who now heads the company. The future of the company however rests on an impending deal with Japanese investors who insist that family unity is all important at this time. When two other murder occurs, Lewis must decipher a cryptic clue left in an old case file by his former boss, Chief Inspector Morse. This Italian produced, NYC lensed heist picture is actually quite entertaining with a few nice twists. Retired safe cracker Chris Gretchko (Lee Van Cleef) is lured to a job by the son (Edward Albert) of an ex-buddy. He flies to NYC and finds out he will be lifting $1 million in diamonds for a shady German group. It all goes smoothly until he learns that the group has plans to kill the second he has the safe open. Directed by Antonio Margheriti (as Anthony Dawson), this flick benefits from a clever script, great performances and evocative locations in New York. Van Cleef is his usual gruff self and he plays most scenes off Albert or hippie chick/life saver Karen Black. Lionel Stander appears as Gretchko's old-time fence. With the preponderance of films dealing with English and French history in cinema, this film gives a much needed, rare and welcome glimpse of the Spanish culture's rich history.
