A fourteen year old bed wetter runs home from school every day to retrieve the wet sheet his mother has hung from his bedroom window to punish him. He races to get there before any of his friends pass the house. This enforced training prepares him to become a competitive runner.
Although pretty much forgotten, The Last Round aka Il Conto é Chiuso is a good example of a familiar story made fresh by the quality of its execution, as a stranger drifts into a decaying Italian industrial looking to settle an old score. But this violent modern-day (well, 1976) poliziotteschi is closer to Dashiell Hammett's Red Harvest than the first two films it inspired, Yojimbo and Fistful of Dollars, set in its own Italian Poisonville divided between two rival gangs that he soon sets against each other. Surprisingly, despite being directed by the sometimes more adequate than inspired Stelvio Massi, it's shot with striking visual imagination and remarkably fluid camera-work from Franco Delli Colli. The two leads are impressive too, with Luc Merenda a wonderfully effective and dapper villain and undefeated middleweight champion boxer and offscreen wife-beater and murderer Carlos Monzon a surprisingly effective leading man in the mould of a young Charles Bronson.
I got this under the title SPECIAL SQUAD SHOOTS ON SIGHT. I've been slowly watching this movie over the past year in 5 minute increments and I finally finished it tonight. It is a Turkish/Italian co production starring the perfectly named Tony Tiger (real name Irfan Atasoy) as a reporter/part time cop/hypnotist (!) who is blackmailed into working for some small time crooks led by Gordon Mitchell, who sounds like Popeye in this. The gang's goal is to steal a mystical Golden Buddha with the help of Tony's hypnotic powers. The film is needlessly convoluted, with mysterious phone calls where you don't know who is on the other end and characters popping up that you have no idea who they are. It also doesn't help that Tony and the other male lead (a cop whose name I have already forgotten) look almost exactly the same.
