A painter on the verge of suicide finds comfort in Seon-hie. She gives birth to his son but his mother forces him to separate from her. He decides the way to financial independence from his mother is to win a national art contest.
Ali is a young boxer who is going to America to pursue his dream of becoming a champion, but very soon is trapped by a gangster mob. He get involved with them agreeing to follow their orders. He wins his boxing matches and everything is OK until they order him to loose a match. He wins that match causing them to loose a lot of money so they beat him to death.
Two elderly men vie for the love of the equally elderly Bok-rae. She chooses Deok-su. The spurned suitor, Yeong-gam, refuses food and becomes very sickly. Deok-su has a stroke and his elderly wife must work to support him and pay for his medication while Yeong-gam accuses him of ruining Bok-rae's life.
