He is known everywhere as one of the world's greatest playwrights. But who was he? Born Jean-Baptiste Poquelin in 1622, the son of a prosperous tapestry maker. His mother died when he was a boy. Growing up in the teeming streets of 17th century Paris, Jean Baptiste received a good Jesuit education and was fascinated by the street fairs and traveling carnivals that flourished in spite of the religious repression and hypocrisy of those cruel times. As a young man he joined the theatrical Bejart family to establish the Illustre-Theatre, which soon went bankrupt. The troupe reformed, found patronage, and went on the road for thirteen years, performing all over France. Poquelin developed his stagecraft adapting Commedia dell Arte plots to please brutalized peasants and cynical townspeople. He also married Madeline Bejart, the widowed daughter of the troupe's founder. Later he entered into a love affair with Mme Bejart's daughter, to the dismay of all. The troupe eventually... Written by John Christopher For some strange reason I have now sat through practically all of these 70's cheerleader movies. Only The Swinging Cheerleaders (directed by Jack Hill) is a drive-in classic, but Satan's Cheerleaders comes close. The Cheerleaders (1972)is truly awful but it does deliver on the softcore sleaze. The Revenge of the Cheerleaders features the disturbing images of a very pregnant Rainbeaux Smith and a not-so-pregnant David Hasselhoff cavorting around in the nude. The Pom-Pom Girls is surprisingly innocent and realistic and might have appealed more to actual 70's teenagers than horny middle-aged men. The Cheerleader's Wild Weekend is forgettable (at least, I've forgotten it). Then there's this movie, which is probably the most obscure of the cycle. The plot resembles that of the original The Cheerleaders where our nubile heroines attempt to "wear out" the opposing team before the big game, except that it's set on the beach (where's Jaws when you need him?) It might be the worst of 70's cheerleader exploitation flicks, but at least it's better than Bring It On. Three bank robbers on the run in their aging Citroen come across a remote beach house & find that as a perfect place to hide out. Trouble is, though, the house is occupied, by a few Catholic school girls and their teacher, who is also a nun. The sadistic bank robbers move right on in, kill the maid, and then proceed to have their way with a a couple of the girls and their teacher. One girl spurned one robber's advances with a deftly aimed comb handle to the groin area, and he's not doing too well, though. The girls, of course, and the nun, are not about to continue to be subjected to rape & torture, and eventually get the upper hand. This is no where near as nasty as "Last House On The Left", it's more a rather pale imitation. Still though, it's a decent enough exploitation film, if you like that sort of thing, but there's nothing to elevate it above that particular distinction. 6 out of 10.
