Transposition of the classical play "Hamlet" to the Brazilian rural scenery. Farmer's son returns home after his father's death and can't stand the thought of his mother marrying his uncle. An ex agent of the FBI and Interpol (Tony Lo Bianco) is expelled by the CIA and he starts a detective agency in Genoa, great Italian city. Here he is known as 'The American', despite his origins are Sicilian. Dr. Mayer entrusts him to investigate on the sequestration and murder of the shipowner Mayer, as well as of the recovery of a million of Liras poured for the not happened liberation of the dead one. 'The American' has to overcome a double barrier: commissioner Lo Bianco that fears the illegal methods and a violent gang headed by the gangster called 'The French'. 'The American' gets the friendship of Lo Bianco after manifold mishaps, showing to be still an excellent police officer. In the middle of the seventies Italy lived its darker season, because victim of the terrorism. Those were the so-called 'Anni di Piombo' (Leaden Years), so many Italian films reflect the fear that could be read in the eyes of Italians. This rare crime-cop movie is an explicit example of that climate. Excellent O.S.T. by Franco Micalizzi. French version (dubbed in Italian at bcult.it) is 95 minutes longer. Trilogy of Terror (original title: Trilogia de Terror) is a 1968 Brazilian horror film by Brazilian film director/actor José Mojica Marins. Marins is also known by his alter ego Zé do Caixao (in English, Coffin Joe). With archive footage of 'kino newsreels', a script that is loosely based on the utopian fantasies of Fritz Lang and about the forbidden passionate love affair between a photographer and his model. The Dark Night takes Oleg Kovalov a little closer to his target: to write a complete history of the twentieth century in the language of film. Not a documentary or chronological history, but a lyrical, subjective and poetic history. In Sergei Eisenstein - An Autobiography, we witnessed the stormy 1920s and the blossoming culture of that era, in Scorpion's Garden we saw the paranoia of the Cold War and the thaw that followed. The Dark Night, just like Concert for a Rat before, is on the subject of the dictatorial 1930s. Kovalov has little faith in the documentary as a means to find truth. He does not think that the truth can be found within existing genres. So his films transgress those genres. Documentary and fiction are just as difficult to distinguish in his work as fictional characters from concrete people in old newsreels and other archive footage. That also goes for The Dark Night. The film combines archive footage from the Third Reich with a script that is loosely based on the fantasies of Fritz Lang: a lyrical thriller with horror elements.
