This Italian produced, NYC lensed heist picture is actually quite entertaining with a few nice twists. Retired safe cracker Chris Gretchko (Lee Van Cleef) is lured to a job by the son (Edward Albert) of an ex-buddy. He flies to NYC and finds out he will be lifting $1 million in diamonds for a shady German group. It all goes smoothly until he learns that the group has plans to kill the second he has the safe open. Directed by Antonio Margheriti (as Anthony Dawson), this flick benefits from a clever script, great performances and evocative locations in New York. Van Cleef is his usual gruff self and he plays most scenes off Albert or hippie chick/life saver Karen Black. Lionel Stander appears as Gretchko's old-time fence. For although made in the heyday of the Italian crime genre this one is no zenith. Dan Caputo (George Eastman of dubious Antropophagus-fame) arrives in New York to avenge the death of his father, a cop involved with the mafia. Dan clears up the murder (and kills what seem like some 30 people) with help of local mob boss Duke (Jack Palance) and then flies back to wherever he came from. Possibly there is a bit more to the story, but the script is so confused so there is little point in trying to describe the goings-on. Suffice to say there is a little romance, brief scenes childhood reminiscing, and a helluva lot of shoot outs. Some of which are quite exiting in a cheapo euro trash way. The highlight of the film is definitely the opening scene at the airport when Dan arrives during some sort of terrorist attack simply to shoot his way through it. All in all it's not a badly done revenge film technically, and it's clichéd in the best sense of the word, but it suffers from some seriously dragging scenes, and a poorly executed whodunit sub plot, which slows the whole thing down. Soon, our Pericles, who is the gorgeous Joe Dallesandro incarnate, is living with the newly directionless Sandro; Pericles soon takes Sandro through the fast, thrilling, dangerous, and fleeting, swiftly fleeting, curves of life. As Pericles tries to help Sandro earn a living as a petty thief, Sandro tries to help Pericles learn to love life again. Joe Dallesandro is remarkable as an ex-championship motorcyclist whose career prematurely ended after a nasty accident. The fates of Pericles and Sandro leave an indelible mark upon the viewers; as the other poster commented, the curves are muddled, but they are muddled with good cause. A young boy, Jack, is battling and undergoing treatment for cancer. A young girl helps Jack find his own unique, Yankee-filled fantasy.
