"The Hour of Crimson Rose" is a sweet, old-fashioned, time-travel story. A young girl of 1960's Warsaw, is travel through time, by the power of magic clock. She's send to late XIX-century Warsaw, and has to verify her point of view about history and human relationship. Adaptation of a book "for a nice girls", by director Halina Bielinska, came up with funny, nice-to-watch picture, with "old-movies" look and feeling. Starring Elzbieta Czyzewska, former bright polish movie star, and Lucyna Winnicka (starred in a few Jerzy Kawalerowicz movies). Note that "The Hour of Crimson Rose" is a black-and-white movie. The reason of using no color was obvious due to budgetary reasons, but it did well for a mood of a whole picture. A proud black man and his school-teacher wife face discriminatory challenges in 1960s America. Thakur Jarnail Singh is known and feared in the region and has killed anyone who has dared to oppose him. He shoots down Champa's husband ruthlessly in front of her eyes, ignoring her pleas for mercy when the former refuses to provide ammunition and guns. He then shows up in full force during a wedding ceremony at the Zamindar's mansion and abducts a courtesan, Chamelijaan. Subsequently, he rescues her from his henchman, Thakur Kripal Singh, and with her consent, marries her in the presence of Pandit Ram Avtar and Maulana Sheikh Rahim. Shortly thereafter she becomes pregnant and gives birth to a boy who they name Sheru. With the child growing up, the Superintendent of Police hot on his tail, the trio go on the run and separate. Playing everything from a practical joker to a prisoner, he comments upon romance, love and women in general, as referred to by the title. Prior to this feature, Gassman had worked with both screenwriter Ruggero Maccari and Ettore Scola (who also co-wrote rather than directed) in the 1962 feature Il Sorpasso from director Dino Risi. It was Risi and Maccari's teamwork which helped Gassman win a "Best Actor" award at Cannes Film Festival in 1974 for Profumo di Donna/Scent of a Woman. Gassman would later work with Maccari and Ettore again in episodic fashion with Signore e Signori Buonanotte/Goodnight, Ladies and Gentlemen (1976) and yet again in the drama Famiglia (1987). The Inspector General of the Strategic Air Command (SAC), Major General "Happy Jack" Kirby (played by Kevin McCarthy), lands unannounced in a KC-135 at the fictional Carmody Air Force Base near San Francisco, California (a role actually filled by the real life Beale AFB), home of the 904th Strategic Aerospace Wing. Accompanied by a thirty-man inspection team, he demands that the Air Police take him directly to the wing's command post and once there announces a no-notice Operational Readiness Inspection (ORI). As the inspection continues, General Kirby receives a score report from a member of his team. With this in hand, he calls General Hewitt, the commanding general of SAC at his Omaha headquarters and soberly informs him, "It doesn't look too good so far, sir." 黑森林 (1964)(The black forest) Leo (Rod Steiger) is an aristocrat whose family fortunes have plummeted in this downbeat melodrama. He seeks to reverse his money problems by courting the wealthy Mariagrazia (Paulette Goddard), throwing over his former lover Lisa (Shelley Winters) in his quest to continue his posh lifestyle. Mariagrazia is too caught up in the attention of the charming, conniving Leo to notice that he also makes a play for her daughter Carla (Claudia Cardinale). Mariagarzia continues to want Leo even after he gains control of family fortune and property. Meanwhile, Carla's brother Michele (Tomas Milian) takes up with the jilted Lisa. Finally, in a most poignant scene, the ailing matron finally realizes she has been used by Leo. Excellent performances all around. In order to have help in raising his three children and in taking care of his house, a widowed principal of a junior highschool hires a live-in housekeeper. Unknown to him, the new servant is actually the mother of the man's eldest daughter who had been abandoned as an infant
