Set in 1870s England, the story tells of Annabella Lagrange and the terrible secret her wealthy parents have kept from her. When she finally learns the truth, she runs away and eventually finds solace in the company of her family's former groom, a young Irishman with the very Spanish name of Manuel Mendoza. Script to this film is based on a short novel written by Jerzy Andrzejewski - the same author who wrote "Ashes and Diamonds". Wajda want to do "Holy Week" for years. First version of script was made by Andrzej Żuławski (polish director) and Jerzy Andrzejewski in 1968, but topic of Jews in Poland in this time was highly unwanted (infulence of government). Wajda sold rights to script to German producers.
