Director Mario Caiano is not one of the better known Italian directors; but he's certainly one of the most underrated and has proved himself more than capable of delivering the goods on a number of occasions with films such as Calling All Police Cars, Night of the Doomed, and this film. The Polizi genre is best known for it's fun action flicks with a focus on car chases and shootouts; but with this film, the director has taken the theme and added an extremely grim atmosphere to it, and this bodes well with the plot line which takes in a robbery gone wrong, a resulting war between the criminals and a police investigation. The film opens with a bank robbery in which the crooks make off with a load of money which was intended for some workers' pay packets. This interests Police Commissioner Foschi as the wages are normally paid in cheque. It deals with the psychological ravishing of a sensitive and literate young man during the first year in his service in the Italian army. He is abused and shoved about by officers and non-commissioned personnel, and when he has the audacity to become a good soldier, he is shunned by the other trainees. The soldier, Passeri, is played by the talented Michele Placido, who was the youngest brother in THREE BROTHERS and the teacher in FOREVER MARY, both made after this film. Much of the movie treats Passeri's relationship with a strict and possibly psychotic young officer (Franco Nero) and his sluttish young wife, played by French actress Miou-Miou. The movie delves into the relationship between power and sexuality, has some scenes that are rather graphic. A young man tries to rob a jewellery store but gets caught and sent to prison. Inside he befriends a crime boss and they break out together. After this comes the first plot twist which I'm not going to reveal...All in all an entertaining crime flick for fans of European hardboiled cinema of the seventies. Includes a truly remarkable motorcycle chasing a lorry- scene which includes either real crash footage or the most convincing effects I've ever seen.
