After a rocky start in his new school Robbie adjusts and is befriended by Gavin and Allison, whom he grows to love as the years pass. This movie shows the idealized career of the singer Al Jolson. A little Jewish boy comes up against the will of his father to be in showbiz, becomes a star, falls in love with a dancer not of his religion and marries her. A private detective is hired by the owner of a music store to find a young girl he grew up with. Suspicious as to why someone would pay a lot of money to find someone he hasn't seen in years, the detective digs further and soon winds up in a scheme involving a set of valuable old phonograph records, a dead millionaire and murder.
