duardo Belmonte overhears his new step-mother, Maria, and her lover, Don Ricardo Gonzales plotting to take over the Belmonte rancho on the night of the fiesta given by her husband, Don Carlos Belmonte. Eduardo offers Maria money if she will depart the hacienda premises, but she refuses and then accuses Eduardo of making love to her. Susanne asks him to go but he doesn't want to, so they share Susanne's apartment and even discover their sympathy and then their love for each other. That encourages him a little, of course. But then he hears that Ferdinand Brückner is still alive and also lives in Berlin. Brückner was his Captain during WW2, he gave the order to kill more than 100 innocent people, many children and women among them, on Christmas 1942 in Poland. He accidentally becomes the "Mystery Lady" on a radio show after his deep bass voice becomes a strange, haunting falsetto following an attack of laryngitis, and earns a few extra dollars as such. He explains his sudden affluence to his sweetheart, Alice Tinkerton, by jokingly telling her he has robbed a bank, but not knowing that the Elmwood Bank has just been held up.
