He's saved, however, by a kind-hearted prostitute named Emma, who shelters the man in the modest apartment she shares with her ne'er-do-well brother, Gustav. Eventually, Robert starts to patch his life back together through the help of Emma (who becomes enamoured with Robert) and a generous old photographer who employs him as an assistant. His world gets upended once again, however, when Gustav is implicated in the murder of one of Emma's clients. Sigrid, A French dancer, diagnosed with a weak heart, is ordered by her doctor never to dance again. But when her dancing skills are needed by her lover's father to help quell a native uprising on the East Indian frontier, she determines to dance whatever the cost. Based on Herman Bang's novel Mikael, Vingarne is a silent melodrama about an artist's love for his newfound male model. Radically, the film opens with director Stiller and his cinematographer coming across a sensual staue of Icarus in the gardens in Stockholm. Then the movie proper begins, with artist Claude Zoret struck by love at first sight for the young Mikael in a woodland; he adopts Mikael, who serves as inspiration for his latest sculpture. Inevitably Mikael gets his wings burnt when he starts courting Zoret's patron, the unscrupulous Lady Lucia; pained by Mikael's desertion, Zoret dies during a fierce storm before his staue of the naked boy. MARIZZA is the first of Murnau's peasant films. Marizza is tired of her smuggler employer's orders for her to play up to the gendarmes so that he and his men can ship contraband. She leaves and begins work at the farm of an impoverished aristocrat, Mme. Avricolos and her twin sons, Christo (dynamic) and Antonino (dreamy). Marizza is discovered in Christo's room by his mother and she banishes Marizza who runs away with Antonino. Mme. Avricolos sets the smugglers on their trail and they are found, poor and starving (shades of TABU). Marizza plays up to the gendarmes, especially Haslinger, in order to get money, but Antonino becomes jealous and attacks Haslinger. Marizza kills the latter to save Antonino, who accuses himself of the murder. There is a last minute rescue of both Marizza and her baby from a burning cabin. Detective Haffigan investigates the disappearance of a mysterious singing bone that has fallen into the hands of an attractive actor with a gorilla arm.
