When a travelling troupe of performers accept a commission from the mysterious Count Drago (Christopher Lee) and fail to heed the warnings of a local witch (Donald Sutherland), they find themselves trapped in the CASTLE OF THE LIVING DEAD. Terror ensues as they are picked off one-by-one as the Count enacts a diabolical scheme: the perversion of science to achieve immortality. A grim dwarf hero battles the Count's scythe-wielding henchman; a surreal secret museum of the Count's victims (whose number includes British horror filmmaker Michael Reeves) and the arresting Italian baroque setting all make for a uniquely cult film experience. Lars Ekborg and Sven Eric Gamble portray bumbling criminals who get involved in a safe cracking heist. After an era of 'nudie-cutie' films from 1959 to 1963, sexploitation film-maker Russ Meyer turned to this 'roughie' rape-revenge, rural sex film with the tagline: "Ever wonder why wives WANDER?"; it starred 42C big bosomed voluptuous star Lorna Maitland as an unsatisfied married woman ("too much for one man") who was raped by an escaped convict in the woods after a nude swim in a swamp - and subsequently had her sexuality awakened, although her unfaithfulness led to her murder (a baling hook to the chest); some states prosecuted the film for obscenity A widow (Michele Morgan) in a small town begins to realize that her late husband was hated by nearly everybody. She begins to receive blackmail letters that threaten to further humiliate her if she does not pay up. She enlists the help of Franz (Robert Hossein), a man who was once fired by her late husband, to track down the source of the letters. Unknown to him, the new servant is actually the mother of the man's eldest daughter who had been abandoned as an infant In prohibition-era Chicago, the corrupt sheriff and Guy Gisborne, a south-side racketeer, knock off the boss Big Jim. Everyone falls in line behind Guy except Robbo, who controls the north side. Although he's outgunned, Robbo wants to keep his own territory. A pool-playing dude from Indiana and the director of a boys' orphanage join forces with Robbo; and, when he gives some money to the orphanage, he becomes the toast of the town as a hood like Robin Hood. Meanwhile, Guy schemes to get rid of Robbo, and Big Jim's heretofore unknown daughter Marian appears and goes from man to man trying to find an ally in her quest to run the whole show. Can Robbo hold things together? This is a wonderful film! Shot on location in Singapore, it is the story of a Malaysian rebel, Sandokan, who, with his group of fanatic renegades, tries to thwart an evil British general from forcing the good king Hassim to resign in favor of the Imperial crown. I enjoyed this film quite a bit. The cinematography is lush, and the sets lavish. In one of my favorite scenes, a gang of rebels is attacked by bloodthirsty natives! Another scene finds a captive about to be fed to a hungry alligator. If you enjoy high-end historical adventure romances, this should whet your palate.
