To face the long avoided task of digging through her deceased mother's belongings, an otherwise composed young woman, Emily, returns to the family farm in the south of Sweden. But when her childhood friend, Mia, arrives for moral support, Emily falls into the murky terrain of trauma and grief, straining their relationship. Aniara is the story of one of the many spaceships used for transporting Earth's population to their new home-planet Mars. But just as Aniara leaves the ruined Earth, she collides with an asteroid and is knocked off her course.
