It's 1926 and drifter Ted Beaubien gets mixed up in a deadly mission during the Chinese Civil War. After his girlfriend is executed, he vows to get revenge by becoming a gunrunner. In search of the necessary artillery, he returns to his hometown where he makes a deal to buy guns from some treacherous gangsters. Desperate to raise the gun money, Ted enters into a highly dangerous bootlegging mission that culminates in a bloody ambush. Ted survives, only to discover that he has been betrayed.
A successful magician is approached to do a TV special, which he has not done before. He and the beautiful producer of the show fall in love with each other, much to the disappointment of her possessive guardian (who is the person she works for). He sets out to wreck their happiness.

Chief Inspector Japp, afraid that he will soon find himself unemployed, needs Poirot's assistance in solving a string of jewel robberies. Japp is under intense pressure to catch the thief but Poirot counsels patience. When the jewel thief strikes again, Poirot and Captain Hastings go to the home of Marcus Hardman, a jewelry collector from whom an emerald necklace was stolen. Poirot is apparently quite taken with the exiled Russian Countess Vera Rossakoff and to Japp's great consternation, days pass with no progress in the case. With the famous detective otherwise occupied, Hastings and Miss Lemon decide to investigate on their own. Poirot however knows well who the criminal is.
