Marilyn is found dead one morning on her own swing in the attic of the apartment building. The investigating officer quickly concludes she was murdered. He has only one day to solve the case and by doing so has a chance to get a glimpse of the lives of the other residents. A boatload of Westerners is trapped in Manchuria as bandits led by Russian renegade Voronsky ravage the area.
